Part A — Head Construction (Circular Peyote)

The octopus body is worked in circular even-count peyote stitch, beginning from a 6-bead ring and increasing outward to maximum diameter, then decreasing to form the closed dome. Work over a polyfill form or stuff as you decrease. All bead counts refer to Ocean Teal (T), Salmon Coral (C), and Glossy Black (B).

Cast On the Foundation Ring

Cut 1.5 m of Miyuki thread. Condition fully with beeswax. Thread your size-12 needle. String 6 Ocean Teal DB-0027 beads, leaving a 15 cm tail. Pass back through all 6 beads again to form a ring and tie a half-hitch knot to secure. Do not cut the tail — it anchors the tension throughout Row 2 increases.

Tip: Mark R1 with a short piece of contrasting thread loop so you always know where your round begins.
2

Increase Rounds R2–R6

Work standard circular peyote increases following the count table above. For R2, add 2 beads between each of the 6 base beads, yielding 12. For R3–R6, step up at the end of each round by passing through the first bead of the round. Place coral beads exactly at the positions noted in the table. Do not substitute positions — symmetry across the dome is critical for a balanced finished figure.

3

Eye Bead Placement (R5)

In Round 5, place 4 Glossy Black DB-0010 beads at positions 7–8 and 22–23 (counting from your round-start marker). These pairs form the two eyes of the octopus. Optionally reinforce each eye bead by passing through it a second time after completing the round. For extra dimension, substitute each 11/0 eye bead with a 3 mm round crystal in jet black.

4

Decrease & Stuff (R8–R11)

Begin decreasing from R8 by skipping every 6th bead without adding a new bead. After completing R9 (24 beads), insert a small pinch of polyfill stuffing through the base opening. Do not overfill — the body should hold a firm dome shape without distortion. Continue decreasing through R10 and R11. Leave the final 12-bead ring open. Weave in thread tail securely with two half-hitches before trimming.

Tip: Keep thread tension firm and consistent during decreases to avoid gaps between beads.

Part B — Eight Curling Tentacles (Fringe Stitch)

Each tentacle is worked as a two-bead-wide ladder-stitch strip using alternating Ocean Teal and Salmon Coral beads, with Ivory Cream sucker beads placed centrally at every 3rd row. Tentacles are shaped to curl naturally by shortening the outer thread path. Complete all 8 tentacles individually before attaching them to the body. Attach from the 12-bead base ring, spacing tentacles evenly at every 1.5 beads.

01–02 Anchor & Foundation Rows
  • Cut 80 cm FireLine per tentacle; condition with beeswax.
  • Anchor to an open bead of the 12-bead body base ring.
  • Pick up 2 Ocean Teal beads for T-R1. Pass through both to create the first ladder rung. Pull firmly to seat beads flat.
  • Repeat for T-R2. The two-bead width defines tentacle thickness throughout.
03 Sucker Bead Placement
  • At every T-R3, T-R6, T-R9, T-R12: thread 1 Ivory Cream DB-0201 bead on a separate thread segment through the centre gap between left and right beads.
  • Anchor sucker bead by passing working thread over and back through the sucker bead from the opposite side, then continuing down the main tentacle strip.
  • Suckers should sit slightly proud of the tentacle face — do not flatten them.
04 Coral Accent Stripe
  • At T-R4 and T-R7, substitute both left and right beads with Salmon Coral DB-0722. This creates a recurring ventral stripe visible when tentacle curls.
  • Maintain identical tension as teal rows — uneven tension causes unwanted twist.
  • If a single stripe accent is preferred, use coral on the left bead only at T-R4.
05–08 Mid-Body to Tip & Curl
  • Continue ladder stitch rows T-R7 through T-R14. Gradually increase tension on the inner (left) thread pass relative to the outer (right) pass to induce natural curl.
  • At T-R15 (tip): add a single teal bead, pass thread through and back, tie two half-hitches, and weave tail back through 4–5 beads before trimming.
  • Spritz tentacle lightly with water and curl around a pencil; let air-dry 20 min to set the shape. Repeat for all 8 tentacles.

Part C — Assembly & Finishing

Attaching the Tentacles

Space 8 tentacles evenly around the 12-bead base ring (every 1.5 beads). Use a fresh 30 cm thread length for each tentacle attachment. Pass through the tentacle anchor bead and the corresponding body ring bead at least twice for structural integrity. Alternate tentacle curl directions — 4 curl left, 4 curl right — for a natural, dynamic pose.

Thread Management & Knot Security

  • Always tie half-hitch knots between every 3–4 beads when weaving in thread ends.
  • Apply a tiny drop of G-S Hypo Cement to each knot — do not allow glue to contact beads.
  • Trim thread ends with sharp scissors flush to the bead surface.
  • Never use a lighter near the finished piece — thread singeing distorts nearby beads.

Professional Finishing Tips

Tension Consistency Always bead with the same thread pull. Inconsistent tension creates visible gaps in peyote sections. Practice on a 10-bead swatch before starting the main body.
Thread Colour Matching Use smoke-grey FireLine for dark-coloured sections and crystal FireLine for light/teal sections. The thread shadow behind translucent beads dramatically affects finished appearance.
Bead Orientation Delica beads must all face the same direction within each row — the hole axis should be parallel to the thread path, not perpendicular. Periodically sight along the row to check alignment.
